An Open Letter to America

The terrible tragedy that struck the heart of Oklahoma on Wednesday, April 19 has reminded us once again that Americans are the finest and most generous people on earth. The offers of help began within hours of the blast. They continue to this day. Hundreds of search and rescue workers, volunteers from the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other service agencies, the federal law enforcement agents, ordinary citizens -- they have hurried to us in a time of awful need.

Thousands more have donated funds to assist the victims, sent food and equipment to help the rescuers and offered prayers to soothe our anguish. On Sunday, April 23, America was ably represented in spirit as President Bill Clinton and Rev. Billy Graham joined Oklahomans in a statewide prayer service, A Time for Healing. The thousands gathered in that arena could feel the love and support of a nationwide television audience. The families of our victims tearfully cheered search and rescue workers from a dozen or more states. They cradled flowers sent by Americans they had never met. Those who lost young children in the blast hugged teddy bears graciously provided by donors in Illinois. My office alone has received calls and letters from every state in the union, and from Americans living abroad.

During these seemingly endless days and nights I have tried to meet every shift of search and rescue workers as they emerged from the destruction in downtown Oklahoma City -- simply to say thank you. Their hard hats and shoulder patches bear the names of many different states and communities, but their faces are the face of America. They and the millions of Americans they represent have come to us in love. Today we return that love, with deep gratitude.

America has touched our heart. On behalf of all Oklahomans, thank you.

Sincerely,

Frank Keating
Governor of Oklahoma
