MacGyver 101 for Law Enforcement

Description:  In these modern, disturbing times when peace officers are targeted on all fronts, it is vitally necessary that they avail themselves of “any means necessary” to complete their shift and go home safely. This unique, newly-revised and expanded course, which teaches and trains the participants to “think and behave like MacGyver,”  is taught by the “MacGyver Team,” a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who are expert in the areas of environmental awareness, environmental adaptation, environmental weapons, unconventional defensive tactics, escape technique, escape prevention, and “invisible inventions” (inductive and deductive transformation of available objects and materials for alternative usage).    Three of the four core members of the MacGyver Team are veteran law enforcement personnel; the fourth team member is an escape artist/illusionist who has successfully extricated himself from every restraining device utilized by law enforcement, including jail cells.

The first day of the course includes didactic and demonstrative sessions from all four presenters, plus audience-participation exercises.  The majority of the second day is devoted to hands-on practice of newly-acquired skills, as well as “invisible invention” exercises (indoor and --weather permitting-- outdoor) in environmental adaptation and environmental weaponry, presented in a live-simulation scenario format.  Attendees are encouraged to dress in casual attire suitable for “mat work” for the morning of the second day, but to also bring their regular on-duty attire for the afternoon exercises on second day.

Crime Scene Analysis and Reconstruction

Description: Comprehensive and accurate analysis of crime scene evidence may make or break an investigation and ultimately determine whether justice is served. CSAR is a challenging 5-day (40 hour) course designed for case officers/investigators, forensic technicians, crime scene analysts and others involved in crime scene analysis. Through both lecture and practical exercises, investigators may expand their skill sets by learning and practicing accepted, tested methodologies for objective analysis of evidence derived from crime scenes. This is not a crime scene processing course; rather an exploration of expanded ways of thinking about information/evidence in investigations.

FBI Special Agent Gary Graff (ret.) and OSBI Special Agent Iris Dalley (ret.) use their 50+ years of combined criminal investigative experience working multi-agency cases to provide recognized, science based approaches to crime scene investigations. Classroom instruction and practical exercises include:
            • Fundamental concepts to include objective and subjective evidence, deductive and
inductive reasoning, scientific basis, historical context and understanding evidence.
            • Techniques for organizing evidence and information to be understandable,
manageable, retrievable and ready for analysis.
            • Methods for analysis including identifying actions and events, sequencing and
flowcharting events to reconstruct the incident.
            • Application of the scientific method both as an investigative approach and for crime
              scene event analysis.
            • Instruction for preparing accurate analytical reports that survive courtroom scrutiny.
            • Introduction to using demonstratives for analysis and reports.
            • Managing courtroom testimony.

Class Requirements:
Course is designed to develop fundamental knowledge of crime scene evidence analysis methodologies. No prerequisites but prior investigative or crime scene experience and basic familiarity with bloodstain patterns is helpful. Course materials are provided in electronic format. Attendees should bring an electronic device with USB connection and basic office suite software, preferably a laptop computer, to access, prepare and save digital work product, case materials, and fillable forms used in lecture and practical exercises.

G.R.A.C.I.E. Instructor Course

Description: G.R.A.C.I.E. is the defensive tactics and weapons retention course created by the legendary Royce Gracie, 3-time Ultimate Fighting Champion. Royce earned his title by defeating his opponents using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, proving the effectiveness of leverage and technique over strength and size. Royce has incorporated these defensive tactics into a comprehensive training course specifically designed for law enforcement. Like many skills, defensive tactics are perishable; therefore the G.R.A.C.I.E. program is the “only” defensive tactics programs that truly get officers to properly defend their weapons in any and all altercations.

The G.R.A.C.I.E. course is a week-long course designed for instructor or whole departments. The course is 6 hours per day for 5 consecutive days. At the end of the course, instructors must be able to demonstrate and teach the moves in order to receive certification. Certification is valid for one year; however re-certification can be obtained in a 2-day condensed course.
